NASA and DARPA Plan ‘Hundred-Year Starship’ To Bring Humans to Other Worlds And Leave Them There Forever
NASA and DARPA have joined forces to build something called a Hundred-Year Starship, according to the director of NASA’s Ames Research Center. Simon “Pete” Worden said NASA contributed $100,000 to the project and DARPA kicked in $1 million.
“The human space program is now really aimed at settling other worlds,” Worden said, according to a Singularity University blog that covered the event. “Twenty years ago you had to whisper that in dark bars and get fired.” (Worden added that he was fired by President George W. Bush.)
Beyond that, there are no details. But the prospect of a DARPA-NASA spaceship collaboration for Star Trek-esque exploration sounds thrilling — even if by definition, a 100-year ship means leaving Earth and never coming back.
Two years after the death of Arthur C. Clark, science fiction begins to spill over into real life.

Sec. State Hillary Clinton Wears Purple to Remember the Gay Teens Who Died
This past Spirit Day when LGBTQ people and allies were wearing purple to show support for LGBTQ youth - some of us noticed who wore purple – and who did not – much as we used to take note of who wore Red Ribbons in solidarity with people with HIV/AIDS at the height of the AIDS crisis.
In this photo of the Situation Room, where President Obama, Sec. Gates and Admiral Mullen and others are discussing Afghanistan, please note the blond-haired woman with her back to the camera – Sec. of State Hillary Clinton – dramatically wearing purple. This is one day after her moving “It Gets Better” video.
Thank you, Sec. Clinton.
Michèle A. Flournoy, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, is also wearing purple, sitting against the back wall. (H/t Lane Hudson and Bil Browing)
Yesterday I was standing in line at Michael’s for forever - like you do
Yesterday I was standing in line at Michael’s for forever - like you do - and this Mom and daughter were reading off of rubber stamps in the dollar bin, inspiring things like “Everything happens for a reason.”, and then they read one that says “It gets better.” and the Mom said “No it doesn’t.” *giggle* and the daughter said …*giggle* “Not all the time.”…this seemed especially eerie in light of recent dialouges.
Tumblr has turned purple…
in honor of those who have committed suicide in the queer community. Please do your part in spreading the word about October 20, 2010. Wear purple!!
Show your support.
Raise awareness.
Always remember.
